13th November 2021
Get on your dancing shoes for a night of authentic 60’s soul and RnB. The Cheltenham Club was Harrogate’s ‘in place’ between 1967 and 1969 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday evenings during the heyday of 1960’s MOD culture. Like Manchester’s famous Twisted Wheel, the club played the latest soul/ RnB sounds of the time but generally only those that were available as UK releases as US copies were harder to come by. This is not a northern soul night as the music will be as heard at the original Cheltenham Club with an emphasis on early Motown, Stax and Atlantic. All tunes will be played on the original and contemporary UK and US vinyl releases - by 2 notable local record collectors - original Cheltenham club member and Friday night opening DJ Mike Lowcock, plus Harrogate Northern Soul Club’s resident DJ Ian Smith. This is the third Cheltenham Club event at Ripley, and the previous two in 2018 and 2019 were very popular. For the comfort of dancers capacity will be restricted and so advance booking is highly advisable. All proceeds, after the concessionary cost of hall hire, will be donated to the Harrogate branch of Parkinson’s UK
