17th November 2018
Harrogate's Cheltenham Club was the in place to be for fans of American R&B and soul in the late 60’s. It was the cool in place to be seen with sharp suits and button down shirts, bob hair styles and mini skirts. This iconic venue played the latest US sounds every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night between 1967 and 1969. The Cheltenham was a mecca for Mods and Beat fans craving for a fix of US R&B and rare soul in the pre northern soul era. Legend has it that the owner, Norman Lusher, won the club in a card game!
The Ripley Star Club will recreate this cool vibe in a special night of 60’s R&B and Soul played on original vinyl with a great hard wood dancefloor. This is not a northern soul/ Motown night (The club pre dated the name and the discovery of the smoother soul sound!) You will hear danceable rare soul and R&B of the Cheltenham era spun by DJ’s Ian Smith and Michael Lowcock ( a patron and occasional DJ at the original club).
The first 50 on line bookings through the Ripley Live site (one CD per booking and not per ticket) will receive a free commemorative Cheltenham Club CD.
All profits from the event will go to Parkinsons UK
